INSTALLATION
GRP rooflights must be installed in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer guidance, and all relevant safety regulations.
Particular care must be taken during installation due to the fragile nature of the GRP material. The following fastener types and identification methods are to be used throughout the installation process.
1. Fragile Area Identification
Poppy red fasteners are used exclusively to identify sections of the roof where GRP rooflights are installed.
These fasteners act as a visual safety indicator to highlight fragile roof zones to installers and future maintenance personnel.
Operatives must avoid stepping directly onto GRP areas unless appropriate access equipment, crawl boards, or fall-protection measures are in place.
2. Sidelap Sealing – GRP to Steel Sheet
Grommet fasteners must be installed at all sidelap positions where the steel sheet overlaps the GRP rooflight.
The grommet provides a weatherproof seal, preventing water ingress at the interface between materials.
Fasteners should be installed perpendicular to the sheet profile, ensuring the sealing washer compresses evenly without deforming the GRP.
3. Overlap Stitching – GRP Over Steel
Where the GRP rooflight overlaps the steel sheeting, standard stitcher fasteners must be used.
Approved stitcher sizes include 16mm, 19mm, or 22mm, selected based on combined material thickness and project specification.
Stitchers should be installed at the required centres along the overlap to maintain sheet alignment and provide adequate wind uplift resistance.
4. Main Fixings to Structural Supports
29mm washer main fasteners are to be used when fixing the GRP rooflight through to the primary purlin or structural support.
The large washer distributes load evenly across the GRP surface, reducing the risk of cracking or stress fractures.
Care must be taken not to overtighten fasteners; compression should be sufficient to seal without causing indentation or damage to the rooflight.
5. General Installation Notes
Always pre-check sheet alignment before final tightening of fasteners.
Installers must ensure all fixings are square to the sheet surface to maintain weather integrity.
Cutting, drilling, or handling of GRP should be carried out using appropriate PPE due to fibre dust.
Any damaged rooflights or distorted fasteners must be replaced immediately.
